Set Your Story Free - Lesson 7 - Using Placeholders

In this class we'll learn effective strategies for using placeholders during the draft process, a technique that allows you to bypass disruptions in your writing flow by marking areas that need further development or revision for future consideration. The course introduces "xx" and "TK" as uncommon markers that won't be confused with the main text, aiding in easy retrieval during revisions. This system ensures a smoother drafting experience and a structured approach to subsequent edits, allowing students to maintain creative momentum and improve the coherence and depth of their writing projects. From our Blog Post: How To Freewrite Mega Thread (2024): Tip #6: Use placeholders instead of backtracking. We’d like to challenge you to use the backspace key as rarely as possible. Or not at all. Remember: Text can be fixed later. But your writing flow is fragile. If you struggle to find the perfect word or need to verify a fact, simply insert a placeholder and continue writing. A preferred placeholder for us is "xx," as it can be easily searched using editing software. Alternatively, some prefer placeholders like "[INSERT QUOTE]" or "[CHECK SOURCE]." These gaps can be filled in during the editing phase.
