Kamila Valieva tested positive for trimetazidine after winning the Team gold medal. She was briefly suspended but eventually allowed to compete in the individual events. The IOC announced that the medal ceremony would be canceled if she made the podium due to ongoing investigation. Subsequently, Valieva would stumble through both her performances and place fourth. The presence of trimetazidine implies one of two things - either Kamila indeed has a dangerous heart condition that should have prevented her from participating in competitive sports, or she was given a medication that was never intended for use by minors. Either way, not only has her coaching staff exploited and betrayed her, the dark implications of her achievements have tainted the sport forever. So many girls damaged their bodies trying to obtain the same results, not knowing that it was never a matter of dedication or willpower but the willingness to harm one's body and the principles of the sport.
