Royal palace gate STORYLINE: A low key celebration and minor scuffle on Friday marked the 59th birthday of Nepal's King Gyanendra who was forced to give up his authoritarian rule by weeks of pro-democracy rule earlier this year. A few hundred supporters lined up on the road to Narayanhiti Royal Palace in Katmandu, which was much less than the thousands of people that were present last year during the king's absolute rule. "A king is still needed for Nepal, but the crown is not for the king, it's for the people and a sovereign Nepal," said a supporter of Gyanendra outside the palace. A scuffle between the king's supporters and opponents began when the supporters were gathering at the Martyr's Ground and the opponents tried to stop them. The Martyr's Ground near the royal palace was dedicated to those killed earlier this year in demonstrations against the monarch. Police, present in a large number, broke up the scuffle and arrested at least one person. Nepal's government scrapped a public holiday that in the past marked the king's birthday. Parliament voted unanimously last month to strip Gyanendra of his command over the army, his legal immunity, and his freedom from paying taxes. Earlier this month, lawmakers also voted to remove his veto right over the legislature. Gyanendra became Nepal's constitutional monarch in 2001 after his elder brother Birendra was killed in a palace massacre.
