Coon is a nine-month-old inside kitty who escaped and got stuck in a tree at the edge of the woods behind his house in Picayune, Mississippi. He was originally lower in the tree when his family found him and called me, but later, they told me that they couldn't find him any more. Thinking he came down, I gave them advice about what to do. That night, however, they found him using a flashlight and seeing the reflection of his eyes in the darkness. He was still in the tree but much higher where he had settled into a large nest 55 feet high near the top of the tree. He could not be seen from the ground in that nest, and while he is normally a very vocal cat, he got tired and quiet earlier in the day when they were searching for him. When I arrived after his second night in the tree, I could hear his heart-breaking cry long before I was close enough to see him. I found him friendly and cooperative in the tree, so his rescue was fairly easy. This case is a good example of a cat using a nest for a perch and a reminder to look there when searching for a lost cat. They are not visible from the ground, so getting them to cry is essential. However, cats often get tired and quiet for periods, so you can't count on that audible clue. Using a flashlight at night to look for the reflection of their eyes can be a helpful life-saver.
