With nearly 30 years of experience in EMS and emergency medicine, Paul Phrampus, MD, FACEP, EMT-P, sees both sides of the emergency care continuum. As such, hes one of a few doctors who got their start in the street and are members of the Street Medicine Society. Dr. Phrampus talks about why the society was formed and what it means for street-level providers today. He also talks about the use of simulators in education, particularly in terms of competency assessment. He reminds instructors about the importance of fun and effective educational experiences and how investing in simulators -- large or small -- can make that happen in the classroom. About Dr. Phrampus Paul Phrampus, MD, FACEP, EMT-P is an associate professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is the director of the Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research (WISER) at the University of Pittsburgh. He received a B.S. degree from the Old Dominion University in and an M.D. degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School, both in Norfolk, Virginia. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. Phrampus serves as an EMS medical director and is a former paramedic who has been actively involved in EMS since 1981 where he began as an EMT in the Millville Rescue Squad in Millville, N.J.
