Wolf spiders are often confused with tarantulas because they can be the size of a tarantula, though not all of them reach hand-sized lengths! They are named so because they actively hunt their prey like wolves, though they don't travel in packs. Wolf spiders can be found just about anywhere insects live as these are their main source of food. They are ground spiders, but may take to trees or even tread water in search of food. Wolf spiders are venomous, but their venom is not strong enough to kill a human. They tend to run from a fight but if they're handled roughly or backed into a corner they may lash out. A bite from a wolf spider can cause pain and swelling, but that's about it (barring any allergic reactions).
