#40 Characteristics of Normal Gait | Part I | Mechanics of Human Movement

Welcome to 'Mechanics of Human Movement' course ! This lecture explores the characteristics of normal gait, focusing on: Key Events and Phases in the Gait Cycle: Revisit the key events and phases of the gait cycle, emphasizing the consistency of these patterns across individuals in normal walking. Symmetry in Normal Gait: Emphasize the equal step lengths taken by both legs in normal gait, contributing to its symmetrical nature. Cadence, Cycle Time, and Walking Speed: Define cadence as steps per minute, cycle time as the duration of one gait cycle, and walking speed as the distance covered per unit of time. Self-Selected Walking Speed and Energy Cost: Discuss the concept of self-selected walking speed, which tends to minimize energy expenditure during walking. Motions at the Hip, Knee, and Ankle Joints: Introduce the different types of motions (flexion, extension, dorsiflexion, plantarflexion) occurring at the hip, knee, and ankle joints during the gait cycle. Functions of Stance and Swing Phases: Reiterate the primary functions of stance (support, shock absorption, forward progression) and swing (limb advancement) phases. Importance of Foot Clearance During Swing: Highlight the importance of sufficient foot clearance during the swing phase to prevent stumbling. Rocker Mechanisms in Gait: Introduce the concept of heel rocker, ankle rocker, and forefoot rocker as mechanisms for smooth transitions between stance phases.
