Sniper fires at Russian soldiers across Dnipro river

(21 Nov 2022) STORYLINE: The Ukrainian military is bracing itself for a barrage of attacks on areas once occupied by Russia, as the frontlines in the south have shifted since Russia's retreat from the Kherson region. After days of jubilation at Ukraine's recapture of Kherson city, occupied by Russia at the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022, soldiers and civilians say a sobering reality is setting in. 'Kurt', a commander for a military unit in the south and one of the first groups to enter Kherson, told the Associated Press that Russian soldiers are already taking their positions on the east side of the Dnipro river. "Every day there is more and more shelling of the city. Especially the riverbank and outskirts. They started to shell more and more. And sooner or later this "bomb" will explode," Kurt said.   The attacks have already intensified. On Saturday a fuel depot was struck in Kherson. Last week, the city was hit by missiles twice in one day, killing one person and damaging an apartment building in a residential area. While the goal for Ukraine is to push the Russians further back, crossing the Dnipro River requires complicated logistics, which have been made harder since both sides have blown up bridges needed to get across. As Ukraine's military decides on next steps, it is trying to inflict maximum damage on Russian positions across the river. Kurt - the commander - and his sniper unit sent up a drone over Russian positions. Lying on a table after hours of waiting, Kurt shoots at a Russian soldier more than 1,000 metres away. "The bullet hit the target," he said, while watching the aftermath of the attack through the scope.    Currently, Russia's operation in the region has become a defensive one, according to several analysts and military experts. Troops are constructing new trench systems near the Crimean border as well as some areas between the hard-hit Donetsk and Luhansk regions. In some locations, these trenches are up to 60 kilometres (37 miles) behind the current frontlines, suggesting that they're preparing for more Ukrainian breakthroughs, said the UK Ministry of Defence.
