Tips to prepare for cold weather

BEAUMONT- by Haley BullAs temperatures drop, people might take out their coats and gloves, but there are also a few things around the house to check before the freezing temperatures hit. While plenty of people enjoyed the sunshine Saturday, others spent the day following some cold weather tips. It's beautiful, just the right temperature, not too hot, not too cold, Jason Lynn said. The sun was shining and temperature was just right for families at Rogers Park Saturday. We just wanted to spend some family time at the park and it was great weather, so here we are, Crystle Morales said. The warm weather won't last long. It's supposed to be pretty cold. It's coming down, I don't know, today, tomorrow, next week, but it's coming, Eugene Simon said.He prepared for the cold weather at M and D Supply in Beaumont by buying pipe insulation.Mostly trying to get ready for the freeze, he said.Insulating pipes and outdoor faucets is one cold weather tip M and D purchasing manager Aaron Hagen recommended. It's foam, it's slit down the middle. You can open it up, place it on your pipes, tape it up with duct tape, or you can use zip ties, or anything, whatever you need to do to keep it in place, Hagen said.Insulation can help prevent a frozen or bursting pipe, but it's not the only tip. You've got your pipes, you've got your plants and you've got your pets, Hagen said.He said to bring plants and pets inside. If you can't bring your plants indoors, you're gonna wanna cover them, Hagen said. He recommended using a plant cover. If the pets can't go inside, Hagen recommended setting up a comfy place for them out of the wind. Those are the three biggest things and of course, yourself. Keep yourself warm too, he said.During the cold, Hagen also said you can run your water at a trickle to prevent frozen pipes and if you have to leave your pets outside, recommended getting a heat lamp.
