"Psychological Issues, A Fantasist" | The Princess Diana 'Obsessive' Accused Of TV Star Murder

This year (2024) marks the 25th anniversary of the murder of Jill Dando, a British journalist and television presenter best known for her work on the BBC hosting various programmes including BBC News, Crime Watch and Holiday. Tragically Jill was murdered outside of her home in London on April 26 1999. Her death shocked the nation and the case attracted widespread attention. Despite investigations and even trials the perpetrator and his motives remain a mystery. Barry George had a fixation on Princess Diana, including a 1983 arrest outside Kensington Palace. The prosecution argued in the original case that he murdered Jill Dando due to an obsession with her resemblance to Princess Diana. George was convicted of murder but the forensic evidence was later discounted and his conviction was judged unsafe by the Court of Appeal and quashed in 2007. After a retrial, he was acquitted on 1 August 2008. Queen Elizabeth II had even commented on Jill's death at the time, which Kinsey Schofield says was unusual for her to do so on a non-royal figure. Kinsey Schofield is joined by The Sun's Crime Editor Mike Sullivan.
