Join me as I drive the spectacular Icefields Parkway from Jasper to Banff. The Icefields Parkway is known as one of the most scenic highways in the world, with stunning mountain landscapes, glaciers (including the Columbia Icefield) and pristine lakes such as Bow Lake. I got lucky with the weather for this drive. After a mixed couple of days, we saw some sunshine and blue sky and were close to the ideal conditions for recording the journey. Renowned for its stunning landscapes, the parkway is a key route through the Canadian Rockies. The road is well-maintained, with numerous pullouts and viewpoints to take in the natural beauty. This drive offers access to numerous glaciers, pristine lakes, and towering mountain peaks, making it one of the most scenic roadways in the world. The parkway starts in Jasper and travels south to Banff, passing through the heart of the Rockies. It features over 100 ancient glaciers, turquoise lakes like Peyto and Bow Lake, and the iconic Columbia Icefield, one of the largest icefields in North America. .A major highlight is the Columbia Icefield, home to the Athabasca Glacier. Visitors can take guided tours on specially designed ice explorers that allow them to walk on the glacier. The Glacier Skywalk, a glass-floored observation platform, offers a thrilling view of the Sunwapta Valley below. Wildlife is abundant along the Icefields Parkway. Bears, elk, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats are common sightings. The road's numerous lakes and rivers are perfect for spotting waterfowl and other bird species. Photography enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities to capture the region’s diverse fauna. Several hiking trails are accessible from the parkway. Trails range from short walks to full-day hikes catering to various fitness and experience levels. Popular trails include Parker Ridge, which offers views of the Saskatchewan Glacier, and the Wilcox Pass, providing vistas of the surrounding mountains and the Icefield.
