In this video ( • Which Agile Training is Right for Me? - Sc... ) Cliff Rosa explains which Agile training is right for people starting their Agile journey and discuss the following options: Scrum Master, Product Owner, Developer, Kanban Transcript: I’m new to agile work. What’s the best certification to start with? I’m going to discuss 4 options today: three from Scrum: SM, PO, and Dev. and one from Kanban. At the beginning of their Agile journey usually people are thinking of either certified Scrum master or certified Scrum product owner because those are the two most common Scrum certification at this time However, before I deal with those two, there are a couple of other starting points I would like to point out. These two certifications are much less common but worth considering. First of all in terms of the scrum Alliance certifications, the Certified Scrum developer is for technical folks that actually have their hands in actual software development. If you’re a developer or a tester or someone doing the technical work, I suggest that you have a look at the CSD. This will help you learn the Extreme Programming skills tracing back to the roots of the Agile movement. If you are working more broadly in IT and not necessarily in a software development shop, I would suggest that you take a strong look at the Kanban set of certifications. Kanban is a great Agile entry point for infrastructure, general IT and other non-software work as it is a fairly low impact way to begin to inspect and adapt and make changes over time to improve a system. Now let’s go back to this question of SM or PO. My answer is: it depends. It depends on what type of work that you are naturally suited for. With that being said, let’s look at these two roles. The SM is the Scrum coach for the team. teaching the team how to implement Scrum. SMs need to be long on people skills. Should enjoy coaching and working with people to get better over time. They act as an educator and evangelist of Scrum on the team and to the broader organization. They work to remove impediments. They’re the servant leader for the team. Take a look at Patrick Lencioni’s work, or Diana Larsen or the Crucial Conversations series. If that kind of thing energizes you, you should check out the SM role. Now let’s look at Product owner The product owner is the voice of the business to the team. This is a great role for someone focused on delivering value Effective Product owners are fanatics about building Products that delight customers. Great product owners will take the time to provide priority-based decisions for development teams. They have the authority to make business level and product direction decisions Take a look at Marty Cagan and Roman Pichler’s writing, and Pragmatic Marketing’s content. If you like what you see, you probably want to start with a product owner course.
