Elvis Presley - A Little Bit of Green - From First Take to the Master

The resultant album to emerge from Elvis’ landmark recording session at Memphis’ American Sound in January and February 1969, was the now iconic “From Elvis In Memphis” which contained twelve of those tracks. The second album that was compiled from these sessions was “Back In Memphis”, and can be counted almost as an equal in terms of quality, although it contained no genuine hits and still remains the “forgotten album” from the Memphis sessions, in the public’s consciousness at least. Today it is seen as a stand alone album, but it was originally released as part of a double album package with the “Elvis In Person” live album in October 1969, but since their release individually just after the beginning of the CD age they are largely perceived as stand alone albums in their own right. The third track on the “Back In Memphis” album is “A Little Bit Of Green”, and sees Elvis in his favourite guise as the song’s protagonist lamenting a love unreciprocated or in this case, a love lost, and now she has another and the feelings of envy which this causes. It is this storytelling mode which results in Elvis taking average material and making it a very listenable experience. In lesser hands than Elvis and Chips Moman the result could have been some over sentimental schmaltz, but instead Elvis makes us empathise with his plight. The listener is first pulled in with the lovely piano intro, and it then continues with Elvis and Charlie Hodge’s harmony keeping us listening to the end. “A Little Bit Of Green” was the third of four songs recorded at that evening’s session, between two and five am on 15 January 1969, but as the session began on the evening of the 14 January it is credited to that particular date. Unsatisfied with his vocal, and a listen to the original undubbed, unedited master makes that opinion easy to understand, Elvis re-recorded his vocal to the original backing track at RCA’s Studio A in Nashville on 26 September 1969. This was Elvis’ second attempt that day to re-record his vocal, and the first has never emerged presumably because it was recorded over with the final vocal overdub. Charlie Hodge recorded his harmony vocal in the same studio later the same day but no further overdubs were added making this track from these sessions almost unique in that regard. Admittedly, the song could never be hit material, but it is a nice track and much like the album from which it originates, deserves to be better known outside the Elvis community. As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
