Istanbul, in modern day Turkey, has been an important city for thousands of years. As Rome declined, it upheld the torch of civilization while Europe descended into the dark ages and for centuries it was at the center of the Christian world. And yet it’s also been at the core of the Islamic world, when the Ottoman empire ruled over the majority of the Mediterranean. The city stands at the junction of two separate continents and at the epicenter of the clash between two very different worldviews. And it is in this city that the Hagia Sophia, once the most advanced man made structure on the planet, has been used to praise two different Gods over the millennia. All of it’s beauty, it’s complex history, and it’s symbolism for raw human achievement, are still evident on it’s 1500 year old walls. But today it is at the front lines of a new fight, the culture war between the secularism of the west and the religious conservatism of the middle east. So although we won’t be sailing this week I hope you join us on our road trip across Western Turkey to why I consider the Hagia Sophia to be one of the most important places in the world.
