(27 Sep 2016) LEAD IN: The 21st Chellah Jazz Festival has been held in Rabat. Moroccan bands and European musicians played alongside each other at the event. STORY-LINE: The Bernd Reiter Quartet are in full flow. Their classic jazz tunes waft out over the audience at the Chellah Jazz Festival in Rabat. It's organised by the European Union delegation in Rabat with the help of the Moroccan Culture Ministry. Top-priced tickets are just 50 Moroccan Dirham (around 5 US dollars), going right down to 20 dirham for students. And EU ambassador Rupert Joy says they want to keep things this way, calling the low prices "very democratic". "It is absolutely full of young people, they're are relaxed and enjoying themselves," he says. The has been running for 21 years, and this edition has attracted musicians from across Europe: Spanish, Romanian, Belgian, British, Czech and Dutch bands will be on the bill. And the Bernd Reiter Quartet are a mix of French and Austrian musicians. And despite ongoing renovation work, they get to play in the ancient fort of Chellah - an opportunity that quartet leader Bernd Reiter calls "very special". But it's not just Europeans providing the entertainment. Moroccan musician Farid Ghannam and his band show the audience what they can do. Every night, a Moroccan group is invited to share the stage with some of their European counterparts. For this performance, Ghannam is performing alongside renowned flamenco guitarist Nino Josele. The Spaniard has previously played with big stars like Lenny Kravitz, Alicia Keys and Elton John. The festival's motto is "When European Jazz meets Moroccan music", but Ghannam says combining the styles was not as difficult as one might think. "We should know that Flamenco music runs in the blood of Moroccans and that we have Andalusian music," he says. "All that means that there is a harmony in communication with a Spanish band." The Chellah Jazz Festival has hosted more than 200 concerts since it was launched in 1996. This year's event ran from 22-25 September.
