The coming of Commodore Matthew Perry's ships marked a pivotal moment in Japan's history. It also was the beginning of the end for the samurai. These Black Ships, as they would be called by the locals, were not there for a friendly visit. They were there to force Japan open to trade with the West ending the country's 200 year policy of isolation, known as Sakoku. This would ultimately result in the Boshin War, which would in turn lead to the Satsuma Rebellion. The Boshin War, also known as the Japanese Civil War, would give rise to Imperial nationalism, and would have its effects felt all the way through the Second World War.
