Vietnamese engineer fined for spreading false dam breach rumor

Luong Ngoc Tuan, 38, an engineer at the Muong Moc dam in the north central Nghe An Province, had commented on a Facebook post on July 22, saying how the dam was about to break and its water would flood a nearby town at night. Nghe An officials said on Saturday that Tuan has been fined VND12.5 million ($558) for spreading fake news that caused panic among the public. Some families had been prompted by the comment and evacuated their belongings in fear of the impending flood. Tuan has been summoned by the police and admitted that he spread the fake news just "for fun," police said. Facebook is the most popular social network in Vietnam and has been a popular news source for the large public. A survey by the Pew Research Center in January found half of the population gets their news through Facebook. More than half of the Vietnamese population of nearly 92 million are online, and people spend more than two hours each day on average on the social networks, according to a report released in July last year by We Are Social.
