This Philosophy Core Concept video focuses on certain of the letters attributed to the Cynic philosopher Crates, found in the collection Cynic Epistles: A Study Edition, and specifically on the Cynic conception of philosophy, and the trope that Cynic philosophy is the short road to happiness. Crates, the third scholarch of the Cynic school, was a member of a developing tradition that was viewed as started by Antisthenes and refined or perfected by Diogenes of Sinope. Cynicism begins with the student and friend of Socrates, Antisthenes. The next scholarch is Diogenes of Sinope, followed by Crates. The Cynic school held that a virtuous life is the good life, the life of happiness. They stressed developing endurance and self-control through toil (ponos) and training (askēsis). Crates the Cynic would become the teacher of Zeno of Citium, the founder of Stoicism. Cynicism would remain a school attracting adherents well into the Christian era, and would undergo a resurgence in Roman Imperial times. The Cynic Epistles are believed by many scholars to have been written in that later time, but they perhaps reflect some of the teachings originating with and derived from these early Cynic philosophers.
