Firstly, one of the biggest challenge with animal manure composts and mulches are that they can burn plant. This is often due to incorrect or incomplete composting. If animal manure is not well aged or well composted then you run a risk of causing damage to your crops you cover with manure. Secondly, and more importantly, are the risks for having persistent and broad leaf herbicides and other damaging chemicals in the manure. These kinds of chemicals bypass the animal digestive system and into their manure. These chemicals are also not broken down during the composting process, which means you run the risk of it getting into, and damaging, your vegetable garden.
