Doctor explains ORAL THRUSH (Oral Candidiasis) | Symptoms, treatment, & prevention in adults/babies

In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains ORAL THRUSH (aka oral candida) often seen on the tongue - including symptoms (plus photos), treatment of oral thrush, and prevention plus much more. Oral thrush — also called oral candidiasis - is a condition in which the fungus Candida albicans accumulates on the lining of your mouth. Candida is a normal organism in your mouth, but sometimes it can overgrow and cause symptoms. This is more common if you have a suppressed immune system. It can affect babies and if not treated can affect the mother causing thrush of the breasts. Symptoms of oral thrush in the mouth / tongue: Oral thrush causes creamy white lesions, usually on your tongue or inner cheeks. Sometimes oral thrush may spread to the roof of your mouth, your gums or tonsils, or the back of your throat. Who is affected by oral thrush? Although oral thrush can affect anyone, it's more likely to occur in babies and older adults because they have reduced immunity; in other people with suppressed immune systems or certain health conditions; or people who take certain medications. Oral thrush is a minor problem if you're healthy, but if you have a weakened immune system, symptoms may be more severe and difficult to control. How do I treat oral thrush? Speak to your pharmacist. They can supply you with a medicated gel (miconazole) - otherwise if your baby is under 4 months and has signs of oral thrush, or you have oral thrush and do not see any improvement after 1 week of treatment with a mouth gel or you have difficulty or pain when swallowing, go see your doctor.
