Episode 27: What I ate in a day as a 1940s Woman on Wartime Rations.

What I Ate in a Day | 1940s Wartime Rations (British Home Front) 🇬🇧 Join me for a full day of eating as a 1940s woman living on wartime rations in Britain. Every bite is inspired by real rationing allowances and ingredients available during WWII. Simple, nourishing, and surprisingly delicious meals. 🥣 Breakfast: Porridge made with water, a splash of milk, drop of butter, and squeeze of golden syrup. I brewed one teaspoon of tea to last the whole day, and added a spoonful of condensed milk — a real treat. 🥪 Lunch: National Loaf sandwich with a bit of cheese and a spoonful of piccalilli — tangy and comforting. 🍞 Snack: Homemade carrot jam on toast. Sweet and simple. 🥔 Dinner: Bacon & vegetable rissoles with mashed potatoes and homemade gravy. A delicious end to the day. I’ve written up the recipe for the rissoles and gravy below ⬇️ 🧆 Bacon & Veg Rissoles Ingredients: 1 rasher of bacon, finely chopped 1 medium leek, chopped ½ tsp lard 2 medium carrots 1 small cauliflower Salt & pepper Flour and stale breadcrumbs for coating Method: Fry bacon and leeks in lard. Set aside. Boil carrots and cauliflower until soft. Drain but keep 1 cup of the water for the gravy. Mash the vegetables, season, and mix in the bacon and leeks. Shape into rissoles and coat in flour and breadcrumbs. Fry until golden brown. 🥣 Gravy Recipe Ingredients: 1 cup (250ml) vegetable stock (or reserved veg water) 1 tbsp flour 1 tsp margarine 1 tbsp milk 1 tbsp tomato paste 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Salt & pepper Chopped leeks or spring onions Method: In a pan, melt margarine and lightly fry chopped leeks/spring onions. Stir in flour to form a paste. Slowly whisk in the vegetable stock and milk. Add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer and stir until thickened and smooth. #1940sFood #WartimeCooking #WW2Recipes #RationingBritain #WhatIAteInADay #VintageCooking #HomeFrontCooking #1940sWoman #NationalLoaf #WW2Rations #RetroRecipes #BritishHistory #OldFashionedMeals #HistoricFood
