Since 1987, the number of state solicitors general has more than quadrupled. These chief appellate advocates represent the states which they serve, assisting attorneys general in their work and assembling briefs and arguments on a wide array of important issues. How do these “professional sore losers” promote the work of democracy? Three state solicitors general discuss their respective roles in defending the laws of their states, assisting with appellate briefs, and combatting federal overreach.
