Reading Allowed: Shitou Xiqian’s “Straw Hut Song”

This Buddhist poem was written in 8th Century (CE) China. I wove some straw into a humble hut Ate a meal and took my time to take a nap Afterwards, when new grass sprouts And the roof wears out, I’ll add more thatch The attendant here is ever present Not confined to inside, outside, or in between I just can't live where normal people live I just don't love what normal people love This hut may be small, but it holds the whole universe An old man in the body of a ten foot cell I know the great Bodhisattvas get it But lesser beings will surely find it strange They'll ask, are you sure this hut will hold up? Broken or unbroken, the true host is here Dwelling nowhere Makes the strongest foundation Below the green pines, a light through the window Unmatched by the palaces of heaven or the towers of hell With a robe over my head, I can throw off the rest And this mountain monk now need know nothing else Living here, there’s nothing to learn Who here is trying to sell anything to anyone?
