At the Big Stump picnic area as you enter Kings Canyon National Park after a drive from the California Central Valley city of Fresno is the Big Stump trailhead. You'll find giant sequoia trees on this trail, but the main attraction is the stump of a giant sequoia (the Mark Twain tree) that was cut down in the 19th century and slabs of the tree were taken back East to New York and London for display. You will arrive at Grant Grove if you turn left at the junction of the Generals Highway when coming in from Fresno on Highway 180. At Grant Grove you will find the following services: National Park Service Visitor's center, the John Muir Lodge, a restaurant, a gift shop, a post office and a general store. A side trip at Grant Grove is a road leading from the John Muir Lodge, to Panoramic Point for a view of the Sierra Nevada range of mountains to the east. In the evening, the western sunset casts a golden glow on the mountains contrasted with the dark forest surrounding the clear waters of Hume lake.
