According to the Dune Encyclopedia, the Planet Arrakis was discovered by Jasta Mason of the Society of the Mystic Mariners. Imperial paleontologist Pardot Kynes later discovered that Dune once had to have been a lush and fertile world teeming with life. He was correct, in truth Arrakis had once been a green and wet planet. According to the Dune Encyclopedia, the oxygen-rich atmosphere of Arrakis allowed for the evolution of diverse land and marine life, though it is noted that very large reptiles like the ones known on other planets never evolved. Eventually, a catastrophe occurs. Little is known of what caused it, though some suggest that a near impact could be the culprit, but whatever the reason, Arrakis lost most of its atmosphere the oxygen on the planet dramatically decreased. Most lifeforms of the planet perished. Following this dramatic decrease in oxygen was a gradual rise and it was eventually discovered the cause was the Sandworms. The Worms metabolic processes produced oxygen, eventually, an equilibrium was met on the planet. Thanks for watching!
