(16 Feb 2018) CROWDS GATHER AT HONG KONG TEMPLE FOR CHINESE NEW YEAR Crowds gathered at Hong Kong's Wong Tai Sin temple Thursday (15 FEB. 2018) night to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year, which this year marks the Year of the Dog in the Chinese zodiac.   Hundreds of people waited quietly for their chance to be the first to place incense sticks and offer prayers in front of the temple at 11pm local time (1500GMT). The first moment of the last hour of the day before the start of the new Lunar New Year is considered an auspicious time to light incense and make prayers for the future at Wong Tai Sin temple. The temple has increased organisation and crowd management in recent years to avoid the pushing and shoving of the past. This year there was one queue for everyone hoping to start at 11pm (1500GMT) and another queue for the crowd waiting for 12pm (1600GMT). The Year of the Dog starts on Friday this year and is a four-day holiday in Hong Kong.
