AumSum had been walking along a quiet lake near his house. He noticed a frog jumping from rock to rock near the edge. Fascinated, he stepped closer, inch by inch, watching the frog leap. One more step, and his foot slipped on a mossy stone. Before he could react, he tumbled into the water with a splash. AumSum panicked at first, he had never learned how to swim. His arms flailed, and he sank slightly. But then, he remembered something he had once seen in a science video - floating is easier when the body is calm. So he took a deep breath, held it, and spread his arms and legs out like a starfish. The panic didn't disappear right away, but slowly, he felt his body stop sinking. The air in his lungs helped keep him afloat. He wasn’t swimming, but he wasn’t drowning either. He tilted his head back slightly so his face stayed above the water. He tried not to thrash. Each sudden move made things harder. Instead, he let the water support him. He moved his hands gently, just enough to turn his body slowly toward the shore. His legs stayed relaxed, barely moving. A floating leaf passed by him, and he imagined himself becoming just as calm, drifting like it did. AumSum used the tiniest of motions, guiding himself toward the bank. Every time he felt tired, he paused, took a slow breath through his nose, and reminded himself that staying calm was helping him survive. After what felt like forever, his foot brushed against something solid beneath him. The lakebed. Carefully, he shifted his body upright and stood up, wobbling but safe. He walked slowly to the shore and sat down in the grass, breathing heavily but feeling a wave of pride.
