It’s from 1798 and it was meant to apply when the U.S. is at war with another country. The last time it was used was during World War II, when Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps. A shameful chapter in our history. Now, Trump is claiming we’re at war with Venezuela, and that alleged gang members from that country are “enemy combatants.” That’s a massive legal stretch. No court has ruled on this yet. But while we wait, Venezuelans are being detained and deported under this outdated law without any due process, and it’s nothing more than an excuse to turn hatred and xenophobia into policy.
