CST 100 Public Speaking presentation on Postmodernism. General outline of the video ; Title : The postmodern condition Topic : focusing on the emergence of postmodernism Purpose : To explain the concepts of postmodernism ; dissolution of metanarratives, legitimation of knowledge, language games, transition of political agenda to seemingly intangible products Thesis Statement : The postmodern assertion is that metanarratives aren't necessary, and the legitimation of knowledge is a game played by those in power Introduction : explain modernism vs postmodernism. Modernism is propelled through the master narrative of progress through science and technology. Solidifies the importance of social order, hierarchy, and centralized control. You must submit yourself to the nation state and party of progress. Postmodernism develops after world war two, atomic bombs prove the capabilities of destruction (not a definite time table). Postmodernism rejects the meanings of mass social progress and future oriented frameworks. The development of uncertainty of being and social order, fragmenting the decentered self. Main Point : The legitimation of knowledge has three components of conversation ; sender (person who utters the statement), adresse (person who receives it), and referent (what the statement deals with). The adresse is put into a position of acknowledging their assent to the sender or rejecting the statement. Example ; I say our public speaking class doesn't have to attend the zoom meeting today. This is distrustful because I do not have the authority to make an assertion of this magnitude. However, if Dr Ashby repeats the same statement, then you would agree due to the authority he has in terms to the referent (our zoom class) Sub Point (a) : legitimation of knowledge is in the hands of the adresse.
