This week, Israel completed the main trial stage of an innovative, first-of-its-kind laser interception system. The Iron Beam system, once operational, will be capable of intercepting cruise and ballistic missiles, explosive-laden drones, mortar shells, and even anti-tank rockets at the speed of light. "It may sound like science fiction, but it's real," Israel Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said as the country conducted a test of a new missile defense system. It can intercept and destroy mortars, rockets, anti-tank missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles with a laser beam. Isn't that something out of Star Wars? The new laser missile system, Iron Beam, is being billed as a "game changer" for Israel's air defense. Bennett calls it "the world's first energy-based weapons system that uses a laser to shoot down incoming UAVs, rockets, and mortars for $3.50 per shot." According to Defense Minister Benny Gantz, the Israeli-made laser system will be operational as soon as possible. Over the next decade, the goal is to deploy Iron Beam along the country's borders.
