For starters, make sure you have the right tools and processes in place, and evaluate the current state of affairs. Is there a lot of red tape in the organization? Do you have the right team members to work on your project? Are your tools out dated or have the wrong feature set? Next, use a PM tool to set up the planning process. You'll want to work smart, because you're needing a hub to setup the project and one that helps you breakdown the work into smaller tasks so you can create and identify dependencies before you start. You also need tools to help you estimate the tasks with your team. A collaborative PM planning tool helps with that... and you want an integrated team management tool for assigning resources and monitoring the progress. It's easier to set up the entire process in the tool at the outset, so you can actually plan the plan. Planning takes a plan! So make sure to follow these steps: allocate the time for planning.
