Essential guide to using make and do

Do you know when to use 'make' and when to use 'do'? If not, you're not alone. Many English language learners have trouble knowing the difference between the verbs ‘make’ and ‘do’. That’s because in some languages they are the same word. In Spanish, for example, both ‘make’ and ‘do’ would be translated into ‘hacer’. It’s also because, although there are some general rules about when to use ‘make’ and ‘do’, sometimes learners have to become familiar with the specific collocations (set combinations, in this case, between a verb and a noun). However, it is important for students to learn ‘make’ and ‘do’ correctly as there can be a difference in meaning. For example, while a teacher makes a test (creates it), a student does a test (completes it). This video takes learners through the differences between ‘make’ and ‘do’, using conversations to give realistic examples. There’s also a test at the end of the video to see if learners can correctly select the right option between the two. We hope this video is useful for both English language learners and teachers, and if there’s a topic you’d like us to cover next, let us know.
