Episode # 5901 THE ROAD Original airdate: 9-20-59 This, the premiere episode of the 1959 - 1960 season of the Loretta Young Show, was a special, one-hour drama filmed in France. In syndication, this episode was cut-down to conform to the half-hour series format - but this is the full episode that hasn't been seen since it was first broadcast on NBC on Sunday night, September 20th, 1959. Loretta Young plays Alice Ward, a wealthy American socialite who travels all the way to Paris to get a second opinion on her doctor's opinion that she has a fatal brain tumor. Her lush life changes dramatically when she gets the news from French doctors that, indeed, she has a brain tumor. In an effort to take one last vacation she rents a Cadillac convertible and drives south toward Spain. On the way she encounters a local boy on his way to volunteer at the religious shrine of Lourdes, in Southern France. Through the eyes of the boy, (played by European child actor Joseph Cuby) she comes to understand the pure faith of those who line up to bathe in the healing waters of the popular religious shrine. Alice's husband, Gerald Ward, is played by American character actor Robert Brubaker best known for his roles in television and movie westerns, including Gunsmoke and 40 Guns to Apache Pass. He was the only actor to have two recurring roles on the television series, Gunsmoke, portraying both a bartender named Floyd and a stagecoach driver named Jim Buck. Some of Brubaker's other credits included the Rock Hudson film, Seconds, and television crime drama The Walter Winchell File and the television police drama The Asphalt Jungle. After he left acting, Brubaker worked for Forest Lawn Cemetery as a director in the training department. When he retired from that job, he moved to Lake Elsinore, California. Brubaker died on April 15, 2010, at the age of 93. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. Joseph Cuby was born on August 25, 1944 in Gibraltar. He is an actor, known for Danger Man (1960), Revak the Rebel (1960) and The Saint (1962). He used to live in Essex, England but is now (2018) believed to live in Gibraltar, where he was born.
