(14 Mar 1998) English/Nat A huge dust storm more than 1-thousand miles wide has been discovered on Mars by an American space probe. The Martian climate has also been found to include water and ice clouds, and a jet stream in the upper atmosphere. NASA scientists are busy analysing a wealth of data being sent back to earth by the Mars Global Surveyor, which is plotting the geology and climate of the planet. The probe followed the dust storm from start to finish as it swept across the southern hemisphere for one month. Scientists have detected dust storms on Mars before, but the Global Surveyor has been able to send back valuable information to explain what causes them. The spacecraft is designed to carry out a wide-ranging and sophisticated survey of the surface of the planet. SOUNDBITE: (English) "In the period, we are going to just begin what we call the science phasing orbit. The orbital altitude will be 170 kilometres. That compares to the 378 kilometres altitude that the spacecraft will be in when it's in its final mapping orbit, and this affords us much greater opportunity to get science data much closer to the planet's surface." SUPER CAPTION: Glenn Cunningham, Mars Global Surveyor Project Manager Sophisticated instruments on board the Global Surveyor have sent back information on the temperature, wind speed and dust content in the Martian atmosphere. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We are beginning to understand something about the variety and variation in the Martian atmosphere. We have made major discoveries with respect to the magnetic fields of Mars, and we are beginning to open pages of intriguing images of the surface of Mars." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Arden Albee, Mars Global Surveyor Project Scientist The space probe has been able to tell scientists a great deal about the geography of Mars, thanks to the technology on board. SOUNDBITE: (English) "NASA has made a monumental achievement in both radar and visible near infra red imaging of the surfaces of Earth and other planets. But those are flat field views, and the missing dimension, the hidden dimension which describes how the energy flows, where the water goes, you know, stability of landscapes, is the third dimension. And if you have instruments that can measure that under almost all circumstances, barring occultation of clouds, there is no situation where we have not been able to make a measurement with a laser altimetre of the surface. None." SUPER CAPTION: Jim Garvin, Planetary Scientist The fact that the planet has a strong magnetic field which could have equalled that of the Earth gives rise to the possibility that life once existed on Mars. The Mars Global Surveyor team is optimistic that the planet will give up many of its so far unknown secrets during the coming months.
