This short clip from the 2006's film "Prince Vladimir" shows us how a former slave boy from Russia arrived in Constantinople and met Emperor Basil II, and his sister, Princess Anna. "Prince Vladimir" Genres: Animation, Adventure, History, Fantasy Year: 2006 Starring: Vladimir Antonik (Basil II), Irina Bezrukova (Princess Anna), Vasiliy Dakhnenko (Anastasios), Eliza Martirosova (Olenka) Country: Russia Language: Russian We chose this excerpt, not only for its excellent hand-drawn animation but also for its beautiful presentation of Byzantine grandeur. It also presents in a sweet manner the meeting of two great civilizations. --- Basil II Porphyrogenitus (Βασίλειος Πορφυρογέννητος), nicknamed the Bulgar Slayer, was the senior Byzantine emperor from 976 to 1025 AD. He is concidered one of the most outstanding Byzantine emperors of the thousand-year history of the Empire, who tried to restore the boundaries of the Empire to the extent they had been in the time of Justinian the Great. Like most of Byzantine emperors, Basil was of Greek descent, and came to be the most influential emperor of the Macedonian Dynasty. He aimed to secure the borders of the empire who were most at risk from the Bulgarian hordes in the Balkans, and the Persian Empire in Syria. He is best known for his persistent and ultimately successful campaigns against the Bulgarian kingdom under tsar Samuel. He came to war with the tsar several times, following the latter's repeat attempts to invade Macedonia and Thessaly. Vasilios believed in the peaceful coexistence of the two Orthodox states and therefore forgave Samuel's first failed campaigns without retaliating. However, after the last invasion of the Bulgarians and the massacres of the native Greeks that followed, Basil brought down the Bulgarian Kingdom. Basil is considered a national hero by the Greeks today, while historians compare his strategic mind and leadership skills to those of Alexander the Great. "Prince Vladimir" is a russian animated children's film that chronicles the life and times of Vladimir the Great, ruler of the Rus, one of the most important figures in Russian history. The film tells of Vladimir's struggle against the invading Pechenegs, a nomadic Turkic people from Central Asia, and the conversion of the Rus to Orthodox Christianity, on the occasion of the marriage of Vladimir with the Byzantine Greek Princess Anna. The film is a beautiful and exciting story for children, that can only be compared to the classic Disney animated films. And an interesting fact from behind the scenes: Princess Anna's face is modeled after the actress Irina Bezrukova, that voices the character. The beautiful Irina has portrayed also another Byzantine princess: Princess Anna Komnene (the first female historian) in the 2000's film "Chivalric Romance". #byzantine_empire #byzantine #emperor #romantic #king# #princess #princessanna #russia #russianhistory #russianlanguage #short#youtube #movies #cinema #european #historyancient #history #christian #orthodox #drama #fiction #constantinople #russian #greece #middleages #documentary #dramaticstorytelling
