The Avatar is the only person in the world capable of mastering all four elements and their job is to maintain peace in the world. There have been hundreds and hundreds of Avatars throughout history, from the first Avatar, Wan, to the most recent Avatar, Korra. They’ve all gotten the job done in the end, but not all of them did it the same way. Avatar Wan was the first Avatar and the first human to live among the spirits. He was the first one to treat them with respect so they respected him back. Avatar Roku was one of the wisest and most well-respected Avatars. We saw a lot of him in Avatar: The Last Airbender since he preceded Aang. Aang was the most special Avatar, mastering each of the elements by the age of 12 and defeating Fire Lord Ozai. Avatar Korra is probably the most naturally gifted Avatar seeing as she mastered three out of the four elements by age four. Then, we have the unbelievable Avatar Kyoshi, who single handedly created Kyoshi Island by separating it from mainland Earth Kingdom.
