The legendary Big George Foreman takes on the hard punching Alex Stewart in one of the most bloody and brutal heavyweight slugfests of all time! The 43 year old Foreman was a 6-1 favorite against Stewart who’s 16 years younger. Prefight records; Foreman 70(66)-3, Stewart 28(28)-3. This is Foreman’s 27th fight since his comeback after a 10 year retirement from the sport. Stewart had 28 wins all by way of knockout going into the fight, although he had no wins against top heavyweights, having lost all big fights against Michael Moorer, Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. This fight was a war with amazing ebb and flow; Foreman scored 2 knockdowns in the 2nd round and looked en route to a quick and easy TKO win, as Big George only needed one more knockdown to end the bout as the 3 knockdown rule was in effect. However, a exceptionally determined Stewart stepped up his game and fought valiantly to mount a courageous comeback. He landed many power punches in bunches after surviving George’s early thunder while receiving a fair amount of punishment himself. A couple of interesting facts about this fight: 1) In the 6th round, Foreman paused to talked with the videographer with both his hands on his waist. As Foreman was distracted, he ate a hard jab from Stewart. 2) Both fighters exerted a lot of energy to move around the ring due to the use of soft canvas; its absorbent nature were punishing on the legs of both fighters. 3) This is the first time that Alex Stewart had gone the distance - the full 10 rounds of the bout. Previously, he had only gone up to the 8th round; in his 1989 loss to Evander Holyfield. 4) Foreman lost a point in the 10th (final) round after multiple warnings for low blows by Richard Steele (not shown). The same thing happened in his 1991 bout with Holyfield where Rudy Battle deducted a point from George in the 12th round also due to repeated punches south of the border. 5) At the end of the fight, Foreman’s eyes and the right side of his jaw were badly swollen due to the punishment by Stewart. Foreman had never suffered injuries of such extent in any of his previous 73 bouts since his pro debut in 1969. 6) From the perspective of CompuBox PunchStats, this was a very competitive bout in terms of landed punches for both fighters; Foreman connected with 264 shots out of 475 (56%) while Stewart landed 281 out of 510 (55%). The 2 early knockdowns by Foreman proved to be the difference as he won via a close MD with scores of 94-94, 94-3 (2x).
