Burnt Garlic Oil Tonkotsu Ramen at Kokuryuko in Kumamoto

Kokuryuko is a local neighborhood ramen shop, almost neighboring the famous Kokutei. Compare to the slick Kokutei, Kokuryuko is a down to earth ramen shop that also doubles as watering hole and izakaya, with a menu that includes way more than just ramen. In short, it's a good spot to end the evening after a long night of traveling and more touristy activities. Also check out my video about Kokutei: ►    • Double Egg Yolk Black Garlic Tonkotsu...   As typical for Kumamoto, Kokuryuko serves a thick, rich and creamy tonkotsu paitan with black or burnt garlic oil, called mayu. I got their "Ryu Chashu Men", which also adds some spicy miso on the side of the ramen bowl, together with their classic pork belly chashu, half an ajitama, a good amount of negi green onion and kikurage sliced fungus. The bowl at Kokuryuko is best combined with a beer or two or any other drink you fancy. I am sure this bowl won't win any awards anytime soon, however it is a great bowl to warm you up and give you that satisfying sensation you long for after a long day in Kumamoto. Especially since this shop is open until 12am at night, you will most likely find the doors here open and the owners welcoming you to their ramen shop.
