The Russian Federation to the north, Hungary to the west, Yugoslavia to the southwest, the East Carpathia Mountains to the east, and the South Carpathia Mountains to the south form natural boundaries. In a narrow sense, it refers to the Transylvanian land surrounded by these two mountains and the Western Carpathian Mountains, and in a broad sense to the Banat region leading to the Donau River in the southwest. It is divided into 16 administrative prefectures, with about 1.5 million Hungarians living in addition to Romanians. The topography is the highest in the southern Pagarashi Mountains, with a flat Transylvanian land to the north, and the west with plains that follow the Hungarian plains. The Old, Muresh and Somesh rivers, which originate from the East Carpathia Mountains, flow south and west. The largest central city is Cluj, Braschov is the southeastern, southwest, Timishoa, and Oradea is the western cultural and industrial center. In addition to agriculture with wheat and corn as the main crops and herding in the plateau, forestry is also active. Since ancient times, gold mines in western mountains have been famous, and coal and iron ore has been produced in the south, and metallurgical and steel industries have developed using them. BC 1,000년경 이 지방에는 다키아인의 국가가 있었으나 106년 로마에 정복당하고, 중세에는 북방에서 이주해 온 슬라브인·마자르(헝가리)인과 원주민과의 혼혈이 이루어졌다. 근세에는 오스트리아 헝가리 제국의 일부였으나 제1·2차 세계대전 결과 지금의 국경이 정해졌다.
