When the discussion first got really noisy about AI for writers, I admit, I was skeptical. It seemed lazy and I couldn't imagine how anyone could call themselves a writer and use AI to help them with their book. Then, I got educated. I attended the 20Books Vegas Conference in November 2023, which featured a big session on AI. Knowledge is power, y'all. The presenter went over how authors can use AI to help them move through writing blocks, create character sketches, suggest ideas on how the next chapter or next scenes might go, serve as a brainstorming buddy, help fill the gaps in an outline, and more. I realized, maybe I wasn't giving it a fair shot. Because in truth, I was completely stuck with my novel, and I wasn't writing anything at all. So, after the presentation, I jumped into ChatGPT, gave it a scene I was working on, and asked it to help me think about what would happen next. It was incredible. I didn't like all of the ideas, and I certainly don't think I could ever just copy and paste what the AI is giving, (because, as Elizabeth taught us - AI doesn't actually THINK, it pulls from it's database of info and can sometimes go on a weird tangent), but I'll be a monkey's uncle if it didn't get the fire lit under me again. Since then, I've been assisted with AI when I'm stuck, and my writing is moving along much faster. I've written eight chapters since then, and it's all my writing, with a little help in the brainstorming department from AI. When I stopped to really think about it, I've been using AI for years. I use ProWritingAid to self-edit, which is a tool that's been around for a long time and uses AI technology to improve your writing, point out repetitive words, redundancies, grammar issues, etc. We use AI to help generate show notes from our podcast episodes and create marketing materials. There are actually a number of great tools on the marketplace right now that help you market faster, which gives you more time to work on your writing or your business. So, I'm a big fan of AI now, and truly see the benefits in a variety of ways through the writing, editing, (it never replaces a human editor!) and marketing of our books. Have you explored AI? I encourage you to think about it! There are some pretty cool tools to help you! If you're interested in learning more about what AI can do for you, how to use it ethically, legal aspects of AI, marketing tools that will help speed up your content creation, and more, I've got a great resource for you. We hosted a mini conference just on AI in November, and the replay is available for you for $25.
