A 20-word summary A frayer model graphic organizer for new vocabulary A golden line A clarifying question for the author. The purpose of a 20-word summary is to teach you how to identify the main points of a text, and how to explain them succinctly. When you write your summary, stay true to the writer’s message, and capture the main parts of that message in your own words. The purpose of the frayer model graphic organizer is to get you playing with vocabulary and conceptual knowledge. Words and ideas are often complex--and understanding their intricacies takes practice. For this activity, choose one word or concept from your reading that intrigued you, and focus on that. The purpose of the golden line activity is to get you elaborating on ideas and to develop a “mind at work.” This activity teaches you how to internalize concepts and forge your own thinking. Choose a line that resonated with you, confused you, or a line that you disagreed with. Then write 100 words or more elaborating on that idea. This is your chance to show off your thinking The purpose of asking the author a clarifying question is to get you in the habit of questioning ideas and getting to the root of concepts. Great learners are curious, and great learners ask clarifying questions that further their own thinking. So the purpose of combining all these activities into one worksheet is to get you summarizing texts, experimenting with new words and concepts, elaborating on ideas, and questioning the texts you read. A great basketball player often has a variety of skills--a clean jumpshot, a quick crossover, and the ability to create space with proper footwork are all used in conjunction to build a formidable player.
