(4 Mar 2022) A Chicago woman plans to travel to her home country of Ukraine, within hours of getting married this weekend. Maria and her fiancé David are getting married Saturday, and she plans to board a flight to Poland on Monday and find a way to cross into Ukraine. Maria and David asked that her last name not be published because she fears for her family's safety in Ukraine. Maria, 44,  lived with her parents in Kiev until 1991 when they moved to Poland. She's used Facebook messages and phone calls to keep in touch with her parents in Ukraine's third-largest city of Odessa (Odesa) but has been unable to reach cousins in Kiev in recent days. Three days into the invasion, Maria made up her mind to return to Ukraine, determined to find some way to be useful.   The couple met last year, got engaged in October and already planned to be married on March 5, a nod to Maria's grandmother's birthday, by going to a courthouse. But after deciding to head for Ukraine, they accepted a friend's offer to hold a backyard celebration too and have asked people to purchase items needed by Ukrainian troops through an Amazon list. "My registry, you know, has night-vision goggles and medical supplies," says Maria. David, 42, said he feels a responsibility to do what he can to keep Maria safe. He plans to join his new wife as soon as he's able to get a passport. "Because complacency and compliance are pretty much the same thing," he says. Adding, "and you can only turn a blind eye to people being bullied for so long. And if it happens to them, it might be you next."
