Putin meets Bill Clinton, comment on alleged spy ring

(29 Jun 2010) SHOTLIST AUDIO QUALITY AS INCOMING Novo Ogaryovo, Moscow Region 1. Pan of former US President Bill Clinton and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin entering room, shaking hands 2. Wide of Clinton and Putin talk sitting down and talking 3. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Vladimir Putin, Russian Prime Minister: (soundbite includes simultaneous English translation at source) "I know you came here to speak at an international conference. And I hope we will see each other more often. You came to Moscow at the right time - your police at home are going out of their way putting people in prison (Clinton laughs). Such is the kind of job they have. But I really count on it that the positive trend which has been accumulating of late in relations between our countries will not suffer from these particular events. We hope very much those who value Russian-American relations, understand this, including today's situation." 4.SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Clinton, Former US President: (soundbite includes simultaneous Russian translation at source) "I am very encouraged by this new agreement on the nuclear weapons, and I think President Medvedev had a good trip to the US, which was very good. We liked it when he went to Silicon Valley - it was very nice." 5. Wide of reporters in room Moscow 6. Wide interior of Russian Duma 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Konstantin Kosachev, Chairman of the Duma Foreign Relations Committee: "No, no, I do not make any comments because the situation is absolutely unclear for me, it seems to be rather absurd, and to make any conclusions for that I need further information, I need further details. Right now it seems rather stupid. It does not correspond with the current state of relations between Russia and the United States, and I believe that this was initiated and was done by certain people, certain political forces who are not in favour of improving relations between Russia and the United States, and I feel deeply sorry about that." 8. Wide exterior of Russian Duma STORYLINE: Prime Minister Vladimir Putin drew a laugh from visiting former US President Bill Clinton on Tuesday when he referred to the spy scandal which has emerged in the United States. "You came to Moscow at the right time - your police at home are going out of the way putting people in prison," Putin told Clinton during a meeting at the prime minister's country residence in Novo Ogaryovo. On Tuesday Russia's Foreign Ministry acknowledged that some of the suspected spies arrested in the United States are Russian citizens, but it insisted they did nothing to hurt US interests. The ministry statement said Russia is counting on the US "to show proper understanding, taking into account the positive character of the current stage of development of Russian-American relations." Putin echoed this message during his meeting with Clinton, who was in Moscow to speak at an investment conference. "I really count on it that the positive trend which has been accumulated of late in relations between our countries will not suffer from these particular events," Putin said. Meanwhile in Moscow, Chairman of the Duma Foreign Relations Committee, Konstantin Kosachev, described the arrests as absurd. "I need further details. Right now it seems rather stupid. It does not correspond with the current state of relations between Russia and the United States," he said. Kosachev also echoed comments made by some of his lawmaker colleagues, by hinting some in the US government may be trying to undermine President Barack Obama's warming relations with Russia.
