How Heavy Pruning Leads to Garden Success : Cutting Back Tagetes Lemmonii for a Stunning Spring

Today’s star? Tagetes lemmonii — aka Mexican Marigold! 💛 One of my all-time favorite shrubs. It's tough, drought-tolerant, smells minty-lemony amazing, and puts on a show with vibrant yellow blooms. 🌼 Even though it might look a little "rough" in the winter, don't worry! With a little patience and the right pruning, it flushes back with healthy, lush new growth. ✂️ Here's what we did: 🔹 Planted it about a month and a half ago (yes, in the dead of winter!). 🔹 Cut it back hard — you can prune it down to just 6 inches if needed! 🔹 Focused on trimming spent flowers and dead stems to redirect energy to the new shoots. 🔹 Watched it BURST back to life within just a few weeks! 🌱💥 If you want faster, healthier growth, don't be afraid to prune aggressively (especially with tough plants like Tagetes). Removing the old, spent stems frees up water and nutrients for the fresh growth! Bonus? This plant is so forgiving. Even if you accidentally snap branches or a dog barrels through it (true story!), it'll bounce right back. 🤭 Oh—and if you're more of a "lazy gardener" 😉 you can even do a rough cut, and it will still reward you with gorgeous blooms!’ Have you ever been nervous to cut back your perennials? Or do you love giving them a good haircut and watching the growth happen? Tell me in the comments! 👇✨ Like, comment, and subscribe for more landscaping inspiration and design tips from Sara!
