Ice sculptures enchant visitors at opening of annual festival in Harbin

(5 Jan 2015) The 31st International Ice and Snow Festival officially kicked off in the Chinese city of Harbin on Monday, with visitors arriving in droves to marvel at giant sculptures carved from ice and snow. The main venue, Ice and Snow World, featured castles and famous buildings recreated out of thick blocks of ice that lit up after nightfall. This year the festival's opening ceremony was cancelled without an official reason. This did not deter thousands of tourists from all over China and overseas from braving the north-eastern city's freezing temperatures to climb up castles made of ice, slide down an ice toboggan and lounge on ice sofas. Harbin's trademark annual event - the world's largest ice and snow festival - lasts until February 25th.
