The Environmental Aspects of Offshore Decommissioning

Owners of oil and gas installations, and pipelines, are required to decommission their offshore infrastructure at the end of a field’s economic life. To support this activity asset owners are required to undertake an Environmental Appraisal of the planned decommissioning activity. The appraisal should be proportionate to the scale of the activities described in the Decommissioning Programme, which is submitted by the asset owner to the Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED). The Environmental Appraisal covers the environmental impact of all decommissioning activities at the offshore location and at the onshore dismantling and disposal site/s. It provides information on the potential environmental impacts of the selected decommissioning option/s. Where mitigation measures, or remedial works, are required these are also outlined within the Environmental Assessment. Ian Tarplee, Frazer-Nash Consultancy Environmental Group Leader, delivers a webinar on Environmental Appraisal for offshore Oil & Gas asset decommissioning. The webinar provides a theoretical overview of the environmental requirements, challenges and compliance obligations associated with the decommissioning of ageing offshore oil & gas assets. The presentation will include an overview of the Environmental Appraisal Guidelines developed by the industry body Decom North Sea.
