Karlen Mirzoyan Conductor, Folklorist, Tar Player September 21, 1937 – July 18, 2020 Karlen Mirzoyan was born on September 21, 1937, in Yerevan. From 1952 to 1956, he performed with the Vardan Buni String Quartet while studying at the R. Melikyan Music College, which he graduated from in 1956. In 1957, he performed Lezginka from Aram Khachaturian’s ballet Gayane at the First International Youth Festival in Moscow, accompanied by piano. He was awarded a gold medal for this performance. That same year, he was named a laureate of the 6th Moscow Youth and Students’ Collaboration Festival. Between 1957 and 1960, he performed with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra of Folk Instruments. He graduated from the Komitas State Conservatory in 1965. From 1967 to 1970, Mirzoyan lived in Tashkent, where he studied under orchestral art expert and conductor Ashot Ter-Petrosyan. During this period, he refined his skills in performance and orchestral leadership. He also studied Uzbek folk instruments and served as acting conductor of the Tashkent State Folk Instruments Orchestra. Upon returning to Yerevan, from 1971 to 1976, he led the instrumental division of the State Dance Ensemble of Armenia. During this time, he began developing the concept of an ensemble dedicated to Armenian wind instruments. With support from the Ministry of Culture, he assembled a group of classically trained musicians and introduced them to traditional Armenian wind instruments. This ensemble, later named Tkzar, gave its debut concert in September 1977 at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall. In 1982, the group received official state recognition. During the 1980s, he conducted research on historical instruments such as the pku, revising their construction and classification using archival and ethnographic sources. Mirzoyan continued as Tkzar’s artistic director and conductor until 2001. From 2001 to 2012, he lived in the United States. While in Los Angeles, he founded the Hayastan Folk Instruments Orchestra, which performed one concert but did not continue as an active ensemble. In 2017, he published Reflection, a book compiling his research, fieldwork, and documentation on Armenian folk instruments. Karlen Mirzoyan died in Yerevan on July 18, 2020. This recording features a common rendition of Uzundara performed by K. Mirzoyan, A. Sargisyan & P. Khudaverdyan.
