Seminar: Cuba’s Archive of Cultural Imagination: Filling the Voids Organizer: Maria Isabel Alfonso Abstract: This paper proposes a critical reading of Cuban Science Fiction literature between 1959 and 1989, focusing on its problematic relation with Utopia. For almost forty years, the USSR's conventions and cultural policies regarding the genre strongly influenced Cuban science fiction. Yet, Cubans never managed to write Utopias or even happy socialist worlds. Cuban critics, writers, and state officials praised the peaceful future depicted in Efremov's "Andromeda Nebula" (1957). However, the national product always returned to social conflict and the impact of human flaws in creating the new society. A bis-a-bis reading of Fredric Jameson's Archaeologies of the Future (2005) and José Esteban Muñoz's Cruising Utopia (2009) could help us understand why Cubans keep betting on the genre's social significance and value for social critique, writing even dystopias before following Efremov's example. Maybe the harsh reality of aspiring to soviet socialism while living in a Third World Caribbean country leaks in their works? Maybe they were secret CIA agents?
