Quarries are not just giant pits, they are artificially created objects that play a big role in the industry of many countries. And the largest quarries in the world are truly incredible structures. The fact is that most solid minerals are mined in an open way and gradually excavations turn into giant pits - quarries where the extraction and removal of soil is carried out in a certain way. Due to the fact that the quarry has to be constantly deepened, the roads for dump trucks exporting the rock are built in the form of a spiral along the slopes of the quarry. As a result, if you look at the quarry from above, it seems that you are looking at a kind of labyrinth. Bingham Canyon, a quarry located in the USA, in the state of Utah, south of the Great Salt Lake, is undoubtedly one of the largest quarries in the world. And if we talk only about the depth, then this quarry is the deepest in the world. 1200 meters - This is an impressive performance. Bingham Canyon is the name of not only a quarry, but the entire mining complex. The area of the quarry itself is 8 square kilometers, and the width is about 4 kilometers. It is huge, and its scale is amazing. This mine produced more copper than any other mine in history, over 19 million tons. At its peak, this represents 25% of total US copper production. It took more than 100 years to mine and remove 5.6 billion tons of overburden and ore to create a quarry The Kennecott Mine is the largest man-made mine in the world that can be seen with the naked eye from an orbiting spacecraft. Today, what was a mountain 108 years ago is a pit more than 200 stories high. If you stretch all the roads in the quarry, you get about 800 km of roadway. The mine employs about 2,000 workers and removes 450,000 short tons of material from the mine daily. Electric excavators can transport up to 43 meters of cubic tons of ore with one bucket. The ore is loaded into a fleet of 64 large dump trucks, each hauling 255 short tons of ore at a time; the trucks themselves cost about $3 million each. There is a series of 8 km conveyors that carry the ore to the Copperton concentrator and flotation plant. The longest conveyor has a length of 5 km. In the early 1980s, the mine was on the brink of survival, coping with the changing times and accumulating huge annual operating losses. The mine hit bottom in 1985. The division operating the Bingham Canyon Mine laid off 4,400 workers and suspended production. But, after a $2 billion modernization program (the most extensive in mining history), Bingham Canyon is back in production, this time as the lowest-cost copper producer in North America and a model of operational efficiency and environmental compliance. As of December 2019, the mine had 612 Mt of copper, 612 Mt of gold, 612 Mt of silver, 612 Mt of molybdenum in the proven and probable category Unlike most mining towns founded during the great gold rush, the Kennecott Mine remains open and still operates 365 days a year, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Working in open fields is dangerous. So, in April 2013, a giant landslide occurred here: 70 million cubic meters of stones collapsed. Work was suspended for several months, all buildings and equipment were destroyed. But according to official figures, there were no casualties. Bingham Canyon has a sophisticated slope monitoring program, so an accident was expected and all key assets were taken out of harm's way. The surface of the main unit remains approximately horizontal. At the back, the smaller unit starts to fail a little later than the main unit. This slice quickly fragments as it loses support for the main block. After that, the entire landslide slowly fragments and eventually becomes covered with dust. Small secondary dips develop along the landslide scar. This is one of the most impressive failures captured on video to date. That the drone team was on site suggests that the mine correctly predicted not only the location of the landslide, but also its timing. The result is a great case. By their very nature, even small mines disrupt the natural environment. Operations the size of Bingham Canyon are changing it forever. Here, environmental changes are evident not only in the huge quarry, but also in the 16 square kilometer tailings containment area. #WorldsLargestQuarry#WorldsDeepestQuarry#BinghamCanyonQuarry#Quarry LandslideBingham#Beautiful#2022
