The Promised Neverland (Yakusoku no Neverland) is a popular 2019 anime, adapting the manga of the same name. While it's 2nd season disappointed many, the original is an all time favorite for many. With a delicate thriller plot, the most expressive faces in anime, and genius characters like Emma, Norman, and Ray, it's no wonder the anime became a massive success, and has been able to spawn discussion, analysis, and video essays just like this one. The Promised Neverland spins the tale of that main trio of Emma, Norman, and Ray, fighting for truth. They come to see that their perfect orphanage is more than it seems; they're raised not to be adopted, but to be eaten by demons. Obviously needing to escape, these three main characters come to feud with their "mother" Isabella; the caretaker of "plant three." Her warmth and care is revealed to be cold calculation in search of the "best product." But, is it really such a black and white issue? Isabella was once just like them, even tried to escape herself. Seeing it as impossible, was she actually morally right to do what she did, and provide a perfect, if short, life for these children? While Emma, Norman, and Ray make a strong case for otherwise, I think it's time to reanalyze the anime, discuss its main points, and make a defense of Isabella.
